Musicological objects from 120 years of research
Scientific research into music has a tradition stretching back over 120 years at LMU. In the early days, the subject faced enormous problems due to the elusive nature of its subject matter: sources lay dormant in libraries and archives, historical musical notation had been forgotten, new editions of sheet music did not yet exist, recordings were unheard of, and historical instruments had long since been discarded. ..
The musicological collections at LMU testify to the constant effort to bring together philological research, new technologies, and innovative approaches. Objects were selected for the exhibition that convey an impression of this process implemented in teaching and research: from acoustic equipment used by Carl Stumpf in his research to historical instruments and sources to attempts at reconstructing music that even made it to Carnegie Hall. Today's technologies also support musicology in furthering its fundamental mission.
Researching music means learning more about its sources, conditions, discourses, and contexts in order to ultimately experience it anew through sound.
